As a savvy homeowner, you’re always thinking about ways to improve the appearance and value of your home. Many people start with interiors, investing primarily in the kitchen and bathrooms with upgraded appliances, updated flooring and new paint colors.

Investing in the exterior appearance of your property adds value, too, but hardscaped areas like the walkways and driveway are often the last things people consider updating. Perhaps it’s because these projects seem more daunting or expensive than a fresh coat of paint and new fixtures.

The good news is it’s easier and less expensive than you think! You just need the right plan, the right hardscape products and a little professional assistance. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Materials

Bricks, pavers, concrete and stone finishes will all affect your home value and esthetics differently, so choose carefully to maximize your investment.

Shape

There are multiple alternatives to the traditional “straight” driveways most homes have. Adding additional paved space to one side of your driveway is a great way to increase parking. You can also line your driveway or walkways with shrubs, flowers and paver borders.

Pavers

Adding pavers to your sidewalk or driveway is a great way to improve your home’s curb appeal and add value. Beautifully designed pavers can easily enhance your landscaping, making its overall appearance more attractive.

Take, for example, the entry walkway pictured above. This project features Eagle Bay Brikstone Chamfered pavers in James River and Crimson colors, laid out in a shadowbox design with a 45 degree herringbone pattern.

The finished project wouldn't be nearly as impressive with a single paver color or in a linear layout with no defined border.
