How to Make the Most of Your Backyard Space

Use your imagination

Ask yourself, “What would help me enjoy this space?” Do you want to build a playground for your kids? Maybe you want a patio with a built-in fire pit. Whatever it is, don’t be afraid to dream big. Then, determine your must-haves and establish your budget.

Know what you can and can’t do

Before you start building or even laying out plans for your backyard, know what your city and Home Owners Association will allow you to build. If you end up building something that’s against the rules, you may have to remove it or pay a fine.

It is also important to know what you can afford. Some projects are more expensive than others, so it’s important to weigh all your options and which ones are worth the money.

Decide what goes and what stays

Take some time to walk around your yard to decide what will stay and what will be removed. You probably want to keep the large oak tree in the backyard, but remove the worn-down playset your kids stopped using years ago. This step will help you determine the layout of your future plans.

Draw your plan

Get out a piece of paper and draw an overhead view of what you want to do with the space. Make sure you look at how much room you’ll have to move around and enjoy each space. If you’re having trouble with this, hire a professional. They may have other ideas that you like better than your own!

Enjoy the view inside and outside

You should enjoy your outdoor space every day, even when you are inside. When designed correctly, your backyard should be a beautiful backdrop in each room that has windows that face your backyard.

Make adjustments

Your initial plans may not fall perfectly into place, and that’s okay. Be flexible with what you are able to do and make changes you can afford that will allow you to enjoy your backyard as much as possible.

Remember that you don’t need to transform your backyard all at once. Focus on one section of the yard at a time. After all, just because you are working on one part of the yard doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the rest of it. Be sure to also plan the order in which you execute your projects. It would be silly and expensive to install an outdoor kitchen before you pour the concrete.
